Tim Harries' cartoons relate to the City Foot Bridge

Matthew Harding writes;
The story posted earlier about the bizarre appearance of a giant line of inflatable washing above the footbridge in summer 2010 reminded me of a South Wales Argus cartoon strip by one of FoNMAG's friends, Tim Harries. I'd thought Tim's cartoon showed Neptune rising from The Usk to unpeg his enormous washing but you can see here that I remembered wrongly.
Many thanks to Tim for kindly going to the trouble of searching through his archive to find this for us today and for letting us show it to you along with another great strip that he drew in response to Olivier Roustan's daredevil high wire walk, also for 2010's Big Splash festival. Both of Tim's cartoons were drawn for his regular 'Never Say Dai' strip that made over 4,500 appearances in The South Wales Argus between 1998 and 2016. A line of inflatable clothes, designed by Bristol-based artists Luke Egan and Pedro Estrellas (corr), was strung across Newport City Footbridge as part of the city's Big Splash festival.

Bad weather halted the team's first attempt to hang the 80 meter line across the River Usk on Friday when wind and rain meant professional climbers were unable to unfurl the clothes.

But the artists, who specialise in creating inflatable structures, had better luck on Monday with a giant bra, Y-fronts, socks, two T-shirts, a jumper, a vest and a pair of shorts now blowing in the breeze 70 metres above the water.

The South Wales Argus stated on 31st August 2010 stated;

"Cheered on by around 800 people both sides of the river Usk, Mr Roustan was winched up 76 metres or 249ft to the tightrope.

Just after 4pm, and holding a balancing pole weighing 25kg, the native of Albi, France, took his first tentative steps along what would prove to be the highest walk he's ever done.

There were none of the weather problems experienced on Sunday and save for once gust just before he started, the winds died down almost completely.

"Less than eight minutes later, Mr Roustan had walked 90 metres or 295ft, to reach the other side, to a huge ovation from the gathered masses.

Ever the showman, he waved and blew kisses to the crowd for atop his perch and on the winch down.

Mr Roustan said: "The public deserve something a little magical, they were superb and I want to thank them for being present today, I hope to see Newport another time."
