The centre section was lifted into position using the Gottwald crane on a
revised boom length to achieve clearances over the front mast hairpin and cables.

That is why it came as absolutely no surprise to me that when the Newport Medieval Ship was found during an excavation back in 2002, my Mum Glenys Silverson was immediately enthused by and engaged with this archaeological discovery. I was working as a Curator for the Isle of Wight Museum Service and I remember the night my Mum telephoned to tell me about what archaeologists had just found in Newport. Spytty Pill and Monkey Island and City Bridge Does anyone know how Spytty Pill and Monkey Island became named? Spytty Pill is one of the many tidal inlets on the Usk and the land below it is known as Monkey Island. It is below Newport's City Bridge. It was opened in 2004 as part of the construction/re-generation of the Southern Distributor Road/A48 road in Newport. copyright: Ace McCarron The name Pill is defined as the tidal reach of a waterway, suitable as a harbour, but is only common along the Bristol Channel and the Severn Estuary.  Here is the entrance to Spytty Pill. The Pill is larger than many on the Usk and divides to create two Reens. Liswerry Pill Reen is to the north. The opening scenes of Tiger Bay (1959)

  The opening scenes of Tiger Bay (1959) which conflated Newport and Cardiff.  The transporter bridge provided the setting for some scenes in the 1959 British crime drama film  Tiger Bay , which was set in Cardiff and therefore gave audiences the impression that the bridge was in Cardiff and not Newport. Click below to see Hayley Mills return to Newport on 20th April 2019.
